    芷江侗族自治县是全国五个侗族自治县之一，位于湖南西部，是通往祖国大西南的要道，史有“滇黔门户、全楚咽喉”之称。全县区域总面积2099平方公里，辖28个乡镇，总人口35.8万人。
    芷江境内资源丰富。人均水量比全国高120%，比全省高73%。林地面积3.49万公顷，活木蓄积量80万立方米，森林覆盖率达63%。优质白蜡年产量占全国年产量的十分之一，油桐、板栗、猕猴桃在国内外久负盛名，竹笋、蕨菜、蘑芋等野生蔬菜资源亦很丰富。已探明储量的矿产资源20余种，主要有铁、金、锰、铜、锑等金属矿和煤、重晶石、耐火粘土、磷、石灰石、明山石等非金属矿，具有良好的开采价值和开发前景。境内旅游资源丰富，有世界最长的侗乡风雨桥、中国最具特色的侗族鼓楼群、内陆最大的妈祖庙、全国唯一纪念抗战胜利的3A级旅游景点—“受降纪念馆”及具有浓郁侗族风情的中国侗文化城等人文景观，芷江已成为湖南西部的旅游胜地；两年一次的“中国芷江.国际和平文化节”在国内外享有盛名。
    芷江交通便利。湘黔铁路、320国道和正在修建的上瑞高速公路贯穿县境东西，尤其是2005年芷江机场的复航，大大缩短了芷江与外界交流的时空距离。

Zhijiang city is one of five Dong Minority autonomous counties in China. It lies in the western part of Hunan province with an area of 2099 sp.km, covers 28 villages and owns a population of 358 thousand.
